Bentley Mulsanne Key Celebrates Its Centenary


Mulliner Bentley's custom coachbuilding unit, has created a unique keycase to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the Bentley brand. Made of Dark Stained Walnut and Piano Black veneer, it includes a fluttering 'B' paperweight, a set of keys and a brochure that features never-before-seen 1930 8 Litre imagery.

The Bentley Mulsanne key comes with an open button on the trunk and a second button which starts the car. The key also comes with a switch that allows you to turn on the parking brake. Each key takes about two days to create. The key is cut by hand, shaped, stitched to seal, and polished to achieve a high-quality result. It is strong small and compact, and it fits the Bentley key perfectly. Its design resembles the Volkswagen Phaeton's massive car key, but feels more substantial and premium.

Secure-A-Key is also available to prevent keyless entry theft. This device is put inside the remote-control key fob. It will shut it off after a few minutes of inactivity, preventing thieves from transmitting the key's frequency to other devices that can unlock and start the vehicle.

Personalisation

Bentley's Mulliner division lets customers design their own car. Guests sit at a series of images called "mood stations" and choose a selection of photos ranging from picturesque views to sporting events that can inspire them to design their own. Each time a selection is made, a pattern will emerge and reveals the design and color preferences for the personalized Bentley.

The guests are given a key case made by hand and containing the R.F.I.D. enabled key cards. The keys can also be outfitted with Bentley Muliner Personalised Welcome Lamps, which illuminate the door-opening path with the owner's name or logo when they make their way towards the vehicle.

Bentley claims it takes about 500 man-hours in order to create and assemble the average Mulsanne. The key to this time-consuming effort is a deliberate decision to embrace modern tech. The Crewe factory workers don't employ a machine to place perfectly-matched cross stitched leather seats. Instead, they do it by hand. Drivers have to park their cars manually, rather than using the built-in sensors to guide them into perpendicular and parallel spaces.

Bentley showcased its Mulliner personalization capabilities with a unique Mulsanne W.O. Edition, which pays tribute to William Osler, the founder of Bentley.
